I raised my kids on the Andy Griffith Show! Barney and Andy made the perfect comedic duo! I think most people wanted to live in Mayberry – even today. Especially due to the chaos and insanity that has become the norm!
Remember the time when Andy and Barney had to get up early to take a journey out in the “hills”. Barney slept in the courthouse so he wouldn’t miss the alarm. Only problem is, when Andy came to pick up Barney, he was still sleeping. Watch it HERE! Andy went to drastic attempts to wake up Barney, but he couldn’t rouse him. It was hilarious. Barney was a great sleeper.
I’ve always been a little envious of people who can sleep so well no matter where they were. I’ve heard of people falling asleep while standing up or when the lights are on!
As for me, I need my “white noise” and my eye mask and then I sleep good – 7-8 hours is routine. I’m thankful for that! 
Sleep is very important to our brains and our health. Without it, our bodies eventually fail. Disease will follow!
When we sleep, our senses are down and we live in a dream world. God created it this way to restore us.
However, there is another kind of sleep that is NOT good or healthy. It is a spiritual sleep! While very much awake, our senses are down and lack alertness to the spiritual condition to those around us!
For those of you who call yourselves Christians – listen up!
God has infused His kingdom and His values within the heart. This means we have been re-created to be alert to His ways and His presence. So that when it is NOT being lived out, we should be grieved, broken, and seeking to change that condition. Seeking to bring His kingdom wherever we are. Because wherever we are is where He is! (II Corinthians 2:14-16)
But if you are spiritually asleep today while standing up – you don’t see it. You are blind. Just like someone who is physically asleep.
However, the grievous and scary thing is that God has to be just like Andy. Go to great lengths to wake up His church and the world to His presence.
In Ezekiel, God says to His prophet repeatedly in 6:10,13,14; 7:9, 27; 14:8 (are just a few) , –
….So you will know I am the Lord
God brings judgement to the Israelites in such a way that He is revealing Himself to the people so they will know that it is HIM! There is no other explanation for what is going on around them.
God brought the fearsome foursome, (NIV Ezekiel Comm., pg. 193) – sword, famine, plague, and pestilence – so they would know it is HIM!
When these same fearsome foursome come in the future, people will want to blame all kinds of things on other causes. Such as
- climate change
- man’s idiocy and corruption
- aliens
- science
No doubt, man’s idiocy and corruption, having walked away from God, will be used by Him to accomplish His greater purposes.
God WILL repeat this same foursome in the near future. (It’s already coming!) But He will do it in such a way, that we will still know it is HIM.
Church WAKE UP! 
If your heart is not broken, grieved, and even angry and hurt by things around you, the injustice, the lies, the deceit, the corruption, then you are asleep.
For those of you who grieve over the societal conditions we see today, God’s mark is likely already on your forehead. – Ezekiel 9:4 –
The Lord said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, even through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations which are being committed in its midst.
Did you catch that? Sigh and groan. These are all words used to describe mourning, grief, and sadness. Sad about the heart condition of the people. It is also indicative of those who are awake and alert – to the brokenness around them!
Let’s not be a people for whom God has to shake us so greatly our teeth fall out – to WAKE US UP!
Be alert! Be ready! Seek to bring to earth God’s kingdom wherever you are!
