Nothing Holy! Nothing Scared!

“Nothing sacred, nothing holy anymore!”

family hourI’m sure you’ve heard this said by someone before.  Usually of the older generation.  Those who have seen so much change in our society.

Remember the family hour?    How about when men dressed in suits and women wore hats and dresses all the time?50s dress

Most of you would say, “Thank the Lord those days are over with!”

You might want to reconsider and see the good of those days.

Now I’m not necessarily advocating a “blast from the past” but today what we have is complete openness and “letting it all hang out” – literally.  Is this healthy?   We have few things that are rare or unique, set aside for special purposes.

In  the days of Ezekiel, God was speaking through him to the people about coming judgement in 22:26 –

Her priests have done violence to My law and have profaned My holy things; they have made no distinction between the holy and the profane and they have not taught the difference between the unclean and the clean…..

Why is this so important?  What is the big deal about separating things out in our society between clean/unclean and holy/profane?

What makes something holy or clean and unclean?  We could also ask, what makes something special or valuable?

The answer is in its use.  Is it being used for what it was created for?

So what does that say about us from this verse in Ezekiel?

When we as a society make no difference between something as special vs. something common, then everything becomes all the same!  Everything comes down to the lowest denominator.  Nothing is holy or special anymore.

The definition of “holy” means to “be separate”.  Something that is only to be used for specific purposes – “special”.

For example, let’s take a woman’s wedding dress.  When she becomes engaged, she takes a LOT OF TIME to choose her dress.  Pays a lot of money for the dress.  Wraps it in special paper when she brings it home.  Tucks it away in a special weddingplace in her closet so that it won’t be damaged.  THEN…. she brings it out to go play in the mud with her nephew!  WHAT?????   Noooo…. she wouldn’t do that?  But why not?

The dress is separated out for a special occasion.  Rolling in the mud is NOT being used for what it was purchased for.  That dress was chosen for a specific event and special time in her life.  It is to be used only for that purpose.  In a sense it is holy.

God asks of us things in our lives that are to be holy – things separated out to be HIS!

For example, the Sabbath is holy.  God created the Sabbath for a special purpose.  A day of the week separated out of our lives just for Him.  Ezekiel 20:12 –

I gave them my Sabbaths to be a sign between Me and them; that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them.

Our bodies are holy.  Why?  Because we are the temple of the Holy Spirit.  (I Corinthians 6:19)

God created our bodies to be used for His purposes – to give glory to Him.  They are meant to be holy.

But like the Holy One who called you, “Be holy yourselves also in all your behavior” because it is written, ‘You shall be holy for I am holy’, (I Peter 1:15-16).

God created us for a special purpose.  We are HIS!  Not ours.  Our bodies, minds, eyes, etc., are not our own.

Unfortunately we treat a silly wedding dress better than we do our own bodies and our lives, which were created to be holy – created to be set aside for HIS purposes!

What in your life has become common that God calls holy and wants you to set aside for Him?  Consecrate it today – give it back to Him.
